2011 OSP Best Practices Award – Westlake City School District
The Ohio School Plan Best Practices Award was created to recognize one school district for their efforts in actively controlling risk. To be eligible, districts needed to demonstrate the ability to assess the ability of their internal controls at preventing loss. Individual districts were nominated for the award by their respective Risk Management Representative. This year's recipient developed an improvement plan consisting of periodic internal inspections and required risk based in-service training. The district reviewed results of their internal inspections to determine corrective measures to be taken by the staff. Inn-service training topics were developed to broaden the staff's understanding of risk control efforts.
Dale Gottfried, OSP Risk Management Representative for Westlake, was impressed by the level of involvement of the entire staff in this effort. In his nomination comments, Dale wrote "the district has excellent controls over their potential sources of loss. Facility maintenance documents scheduled inspections of both district buildings and facilities. The district should be proud of their efforts."
